Chancery English is used to describe the written English of the clerks of Chancery in London.

These are the clerks who prepared the king’s documents. Before the 1430s, official records were mainly in Latin and French, but after that date mainly in an English dialect. Two of the vicars of Sutton were instrumental in this process.
