Carshalton Jazz is excited to present the Phil Allen Quartet, a drummer-led group featuring some of the most prominent names in jazz and music education. This is a distinguished group of musicians, and we can be sure of an outstanding evening of jazz.
Phil Allen (drums) has over 30 years experience in playing and teaching and has played at all the notable venues in London, including Ronnie Scott’s and the Vortex.
Dave Whitford (bass) is one of the most in-demand side men on the London jazz scene and has also played at venues including Ronnie Scott’s and the Vortex. For many years he supported Bobby Wellins.
Simon Purcell (piano) currently holds the International Chair in Improvisation at the Guildhall School of Music. He has combined a distinguished career in jazz education with performing, and has played with, among others, Cleveland Watkiss, Iain Ballamy and Bill Frisell.
Mark Lockheart (tenor) first came to prominence in the ‘80s with the groundbreaking group, Loose Tubes. He went on to play in other important groups, Perfect Houseplants and Seb Roachford’s Polar Bear. He has recorded with a wide range of musicians, from Kenny Wheeler to Prefab Sprout, and collaborated with the contemporary classical composer, Mark-Anthony Turnage. In 2010 he won the Parliamentary Jazz Musician of the Year award.
