🦢 Lone Carshalton Swan begins new life on the River Thames

*News* You may have enjoyed spotting swans on Carshalton Ponds – they’ve been a wonderful sight for several months now. Until recently there were believed to be two females left. However, one swan flew off, and the other waddled across the busy Carshalton High Street. She made it to the flooded Wandle canal at nearby Carshalton Place (photo above).

Concern grew on local Facebook groups about the welfare of the bird. According to The Swan Sanctuary in Shepperton, they need around 30 metres length to take off, and that again in height – free from obstructions such as houses. There was also an increased risk from dogs and cars.

A decision was made to move the swan, and when it was spotted on dry land, Neil Blackwell captured the bird. Neil is from a local animal welfare group called Wallington Animal Rescue.  The swan was then transferred by a group called Swan Rescue, to Barnes, where she is currently enjoying life with another flock.
