Carshalton Motor Cycle Club used to meet at the old Fox and Hounds

Start your engines, it’s time for some local history! Carshalton Motor Cycle Club began in 1924, riding the wave of interest in a new sport connected to these two-wheeled wonders. The badge above is dated 1950, and the club still uses the same logo to this day.

There are now many motorcycle clubs across the UK catering for different interests. Such as followers of specific manufacturers, or those such as the Carshalton MCC who like racing and time trials.

The image below is dated 1977 and Carshalton Motor Cycle Club would meet every Thursday at 8.45pm at the old Fox and Hounds, which still stands in Carshalton High Street (and may in part date back to the 1720s).

The currently abandoned pub was for many a central social hub – it had a large forecourt and parking at the rear.

The Carshalton club held well-attended events. In 1927 they appeared on a British Pathé news reel.

In 1930 the club was in The Motor Cycle newspaper featuring Pillion passenger trials. They took place at locations across Surrey. Pillion is when a passenger is seated directly behind the driver.

In the 1960s and 1970s the club ran an RAC/ACU accredited Training School at Rose Hill, Sutton and Croydon Airport.

The first UK club was formed in 1901. It’s called the The Motorcycling Club (MCC), and is currently the oldest in the world.

The Carshalton club is on our list of Clubs in Sutton over 70 years old, as of 2025 – a surprisingly varied list.

There is a motorcycle shop opposite the old Fox and Hounds. There used to be a petrol pump too. The Wardill motorcycle was invented in nearby Pound Street.
