Event Details
The SIR ran between 1803 and 1846 alongside the River Wandle from its mouth in Wandsworth to Croydon, and then on to Merstham Quarries. It was the first public railway to be sanctioned by Act of Parliament, and it was the first of any significance in London and the south-east.
The talk, given by John Sheridan of the Wandle Industrial Museum, will cover the SIR’s origins, its construction, its operation as a means of transporting goods and raw materials for the Wandle mills, and its decline and closure.
Some slides made by Wandle Industrial Museum volunteer Eric Shaw charting the route of the SIR through the Wandle valley will also be included. The changes in the streetscape since Eric walked the route a generation ago may be of interest!
