Sutton Model Engineering Club and Miniature Railway Track Day from 1:00pm until 4:00pm – Visitors welcome to our maximum capacity.

During the public running afternoon, we aim to provide miniature train rides on the ground level and raised tracks, potentially with both live steam and battery powered locomotives, but this is dependent upon availability of members to provide and run locomotives, and, of course, the weather.

Please also note that if you are planning on visiting us, there is no parking capacity for visitors on site, and there is limited parking available in the surrounding local roads. If you do park in local roads, please be considerate of our neighbours. At the time of writing, there is free parking available in Sutton Common Park, SM3 9EN (the entrance is in Sutton Common Road, opposite Gillian Park Road) and is a short walk away from the club, however, please make yourself aware of the parking requirements posted on notice boards in the car park and be aware that the park (and car park) is locked up at dusk, so you will need to ensure that your car is removed from the car park before then. Bus numbers 80 and 93 stop close to our location (alight at the Stonecot Hill crossroads where ASDA is located on the corner).

The Underground opened its Southern terminus near the little country village of Morden on 13th September 1926. The heroic tale of how it reached there via the world’s longest tunnel is told by the author of The Subterranean Railway.

Christian Wolmar is a leading writer, broadcaster and commentator on transport matters. He has stood for election as Mayor of London.

The Industrial Revolution is often thought of as a development of the 18th and 19th century but by 1700 the Wandle was already powering numerous mills producing flour, gunpowder, copper goods, leather and other things.

We’re delighted to welcome back well-known local historian John Phillips to present an illustrated talk that explores the context of this to try to understand the significance of the early industrial developments along the river.

Alison Weir has excavated, from the Tudor records, the unsung story of a remarkable woman who had a ring-side seat to some of the most precarious and pivotal passages of history. Katherine Carey, Anne Boleyn’s niece, learned young how to negotiate the knife-edge of court, developing deep loyalties and cautious allegiances. She had fifteen pregnancies, had to flee England and live as a fugitive for a time and carried a momentous and dangerous secret about her origins for her entire life. Her story is as fascinating as it is gripping.
