The Straw Jack is a harvest celebration held in September at Carshalton in Surrey. Jack is a male figure made from the last straw in the harvest.

Take a step back in time and visit the former home of artist, designer and craftsman Frank Dickinson (1874-1961). A unique interpretation of the English arts and crafts movement, the Grade II* interior was created entirely by Dickinson, inspired by the ideals of John Ruskin and William Morris and contains Dickinson’s paintings, hand-made furniture, furnishings, metalwork and carving, in a unique fusion of Art Nouveau and the English Arts and Crafts style. With very limited finances Dickinson designed and built the house himself between 1902-04 – the ultimate in DIY!

The Underground opened its Southern terminus near the little country village of Morden on 13th September 1926. The heroic tale of how it reached there via the world’s longest tunnel is told by the author of The Subterranean Railway.

The Industrial Revolution is often thought of as a development of the 18th and 19th century but by 1700 the Wandle was already powering numerous mills producing flour, gunpowder, copper goods, leather and other things.

We’re delighted to welcome back well-known local historian John Phillips to present an illustrated talk that explores the context of this to try to understand the significance of the early industrial developments along the river.

Alison Weir has excavated, from the Tudor records, the unsung story of a remarkable woman who had a ring-side seat to some of the most precarious and pivotal passages of history. Katherine Carey, Anne Boleyn’s niece, learned young how to negotiate the knife-edge of court, developing deep loyalties and cautious allegiances. She had fifteen pregnancies, had to flee England and live as a fugitive for a time and carried a momentous and dangerous secret about her origins for her entire life. Her story is as fascinating as it is gripping.
