It’s becoming something of a tradition. The Hope in West Street has once again been recognised in The Telegraph’s prestigious guide to the best pubs in the UK.

If you’ve ever enjoyed a pint at The Hope, you’ll know it has quite a reputation. And it seems the national experts agree, with the Carshalton pub making The Telegraph’s 2026 list for another year.

The newspaper has included 650 pubs from across the UK in its latest guide, with The Hope receiving particular praise for its beer selection and character.

In its review, The Telegraph said: “You wouldn’t expect to find one of London’s best places for a pint out here where London bleeds into Surrey, but there you go. The world is full of wonders.”

High praise indeed!

The review, by journalist Will Hawkes, describes The Hope as a “suburban pub with a reputation for varied and high-quality beer”.

It also highlights the pub’s unusual ownership, describing it as “owned by its regulars”, and praises its “wide range of perfectly-kept beers”, simple home-cooked food and monthly beer festivals held in the marquee.

There’s even a mention of its “plenty of nooks and crannies” – something regulars will no doubt recognise.

The Telegraph’s guide celebrates pubs with charming character, welcoming staff, rich history and award-winning beer. Every establishment has been visited and assessed by a panel of six experts.

The Hope has plenty of previous form when it comes to accolades, having been named CAMRA’s London Pub of the Year six times.

And it’s not just the experts who think highly of it. In our own Secret Carshalton poll, The Hope was voted the area’s favourite pub by local readers, taking more than 37% of the vote.

So, another year, another national thumbs-up for one of Carshalton’s best-loved pubs.
