*Historical* This old and fragile wooden-framed building in Carshalton may have originally been the home of the parish priest. It is thought to have become a butcher shop as far back as 1660.
🗝 It went through several owners until 1905, when Edward and Emily Woodman took over. They were there for about 15 years and gave their name to the building.
🗝 It finally closed as a butcher in 1978, and the building had fallen into disrepair.
🗝 It was renovated and found a new lease of life and called The Woodman Wine Bar in November 1980.
🗝 The name in an embossed font was possibly added soon after the old photo was taken – unusually incorporated into the fabric of the building.
🗝 You can also still see the hooks outside the window where meat would have once been hung.

As Youngster in the mid 60s I went in there with my granny, who lived around th corner in The Square. The counter was to the left where the butcher served up the meat and then payment was made to a lady in a cashier’s booth at the back of the shop. There was sawdust spread over the floor.
I remember it as a butchers in the late 40s early 50s
