*Historical* Hard to believe this is the only one of Wallington’s large houses to survive intact. This is Wandle Bank.
The present building dates from the early 1700s though there’s thought to have been a house on this site for much longer.
It was once owned by the Pre-Raphaelite painter Arthur Hughes (pictured here aged 20) from 1876 to 1891, who added a studio to the north end of the building.
His work still hangs at the Tate in London and many museums around the world. Carshalton and Wallington have a long artistic heritage.
The building is situated between the Rose and Crown pub and The Grange restaurant at Beddington Park.
This painting is of Ophelia and is on display at the Toledo Museum in Canada. It was created in 1865. Did Beddington Park inspire his art I wonder.
