Located near Coulsdon on the border of Surrey in south London, this former World War II fighter station played a key role during the Battle of Britain. Walking the perimeter path, you’ll see original blast pens, shelters, and signage that bring the site’s military heritage to life.

The trail is mostly flat and well-maintained, making it suitable for families, dog walkers, and casual ramblers. As you stroll, you’ll enjoy open views across the old runway, hedgerows, and surrounding countryside. Interpretive boards along the way provide fascinating insights into Kenley’s role during the war, including the squadrons stationed here and the brave pilots who flew from its runways.

There’s on-street parking at Hayes Lane, Croydon CR8, but be mindful of local restrictions. It’s free and provides direct access to the walking path.

Whether you’re a history buff or just after a peaceful outdoor escape, this short walk offers a powerful connection to the past alongside fresh air and great views. It’s an area well worth exploring.

Her sister went on to join The Daughters of the Cross as a teaching nun.My mother, her sister and their parents share a grave in the cemetery. My mother moved from her home in Park Lane around 1944, having narrowly survived the bomb which demolished the butchers shop in 1940.
I cycled through Carshalton on a daily basis during the 1950’s from Wimbledon to Purley,
