It’s that time of year again!
As we enter our 10th year we will be holding our annual Carshalton Day of Dance next Saturday 23rd September.
We will be joined by some of the teams who have supported us over the years, dancing around the village from 11.30am.
From 11.30am- 12.30pm we will be met by 11 other sides at Sassis in the Grove where each will perform a show dance.
At 12.30pm we will be met by Carshalton Straw Jack and a visiting giant from Hastings, Hannah (weather permitting). From Sassis we will conduct a short parade around Grove Park, do come along and join in!
From 1.15- 4pm there will be dancing at The Hope, High Street next to Oxfam, Grove Park entrance next to The Sun and the CryerArts Centre.
After this we will head to our home pub, The Hope, where from 4.30- 5.30pm there will be more show dances from all sides.
The sides joining us will be some of the friends of Black Swan who have danced with and supported us over the last ten years-
- East Surrey Morris Men from…East Surrey!
- Datchet Border Morris from Windsor
- Pennyroyal Clog Dancers from Carshalton
- The Wild Hunt from Croydon
- Brixton Tatterjack’s from…Brixton!
- Royal Liberty Morris from Kent
- London Pride Morris from SW London
- G & G Morris from Kent
- Rampant Roosters from Dorking
- Box Hill Bedlam Morris from Dorking
- Blackheath Morris Men from London
We would also like to thank all the sides who couldn’t make it but have sent us wonderful wishes for our 10th year of dancing.
So….we do hope to see lots of friends and locals on Saturday in Carshalton for what we hope will be a great day of music and dance, and the odd beer 😊🍻🖤💜🪈🪗🎻🎸🪕🥁🎩

Ever wanted to hold an owl or get close to a bird of prey?
Poulter Park is home lots of birds of prey, including kestrels, sparrowhawks, little owls and tawny owls.
We often see them swooping through the long grass, perched on the rugby poles or flying silently at dusk. But our wild birds are shy so we can only ever catch a glimpse of them.
Hoot in the Park is your chance to get up close and personal with trained owls and birds of prey and learn more about our beautiful wild neighbours. Our friends from Berkshire Birds of Prey are bringing 5-7 birds to Poulter Park. For £2 you’ll be able to hold and meet birds of all sizes, from a little owl to a sparrowhawk or kestrel up to barn owls and tawnies.

A talk by Louisa Alessandra Pini, Holistic & Clinical Aromatherapist.
Ask somebody what they think lavender oil can be used for and aiding restful sleep is likely to be at the top of the list, but it has some surprising other benefits too. Louisa will give a snapshot about the heritage of the area and the different types of lavender oil (local Carshalton lavender Oil and true lavender oil). The main focus of the session will be on some of the more surprising benefits of lavender oil. The talk will finish with a mini meditation.
This is an exciting opportunity to discover an important local industry and its cultural significance.

A band of miscreants and juvenile geriatrics, Dirty Spoons can be found arseing around and turning people to drink wherever they play. Defining the term (and probably the sole users of the implausibly catchy hashtag) folkypirateydrinkingmusic, they have had long periods of moping around wondering how to get gigs. This followed the untimely death of their well-loved, try-hard Bohemian, yet beautifully hirsute guitarist, Sonic. When they can get their act together, Dirty Spoons offer a night of beautifully curated and occasionally well-executed tunes, concocting a heady mix of beer, sweat and love.
𝐊𝐚𝐳𝐨𝐨𝐦
Kazoom is a mashup of mixed-up musicians, playing a mashup of folked-up rock and rocked-up folk. Expect all those songs you had forgotten were your favourites.
𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐭
Steeling Scarlet formed in 2022 and quickly became a popular group, gigging Motown, Soul and Reggae covers and playing on the Surrey and South London circuit. This female-fronted four piece outfit bring a classic vibe to your favourite soul and reggae tracks from way back when along with a number of their own original offerings!
You can grab your tickets in advance online for £10 each, or buy them on the door for £15 each.
We are so looking forward to this night, which will provide a perfect roundoff to our WARFEST daytime festivities and will conclude our two part annual festival.
Each and every pound and penny raised goes towards the rescue and rehabilitation of abandoned and abused animals. We couldn’t do it without you!

We welcome Jill Whitehead to speak this evening: The Dukes family lived in Jill’s house in Carshalton from 1946 to 1993, having arrived from Vienna in 1939/40 escaping the Nazis.
They owned a successful agricultural foodstuffs company operating out of Bratislava, Vienna and Budapest pre -war, and their family members included an eminent Freudian psychologist. Jill looks at the family’s past life pre-WW2, how WW2 changed everything, and how Helen Dukes and her parents and cousin escaped to Britain and their very different lives post war in South London.

A very warm welcome back to well-known local author and historian Alison Weir, who will also be selling her books and drawing the winners of our Autumn Raffle on the night.
“In grand royal palaces, Prince Harry grows up dreaming of knights and chivalry – and the golden age of kings that awaits his older brother. But Arthur’s untimely death sees Harry crowned King Henry of England.
As his power and influence extends, so commences a lifelong battle between head and heart, love and duty. Henry rules by divine right, yet his prayers for a son go unanswered.
The great future of the Tudor dynasty depends on an heir. And the crown weighs heavy on a king with all but his one true desire.”
