The site of the once much-loved and historic Fox and Hounds pub continues to be left to go derelict, having closed back in 2017. Shameful that the building has been let to get to the state it is in, given its historic significance in the area. It is also an eyesore and the first impression of Carshalton when coming from the east. With regard to the Fox & Hounds, it has certainly become an eyesore but does anyone know the truth of the situation? I heard that there are major problems with the foundations or structure of the building and no-one wants to touch it because it would be too expensive but I have no idea if this is correct …

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I have heard about the foundations. It has a very large cellar underneath and this is known to flood in heavy rain. I’m not clear from a structural point of view how this would effect options for keeping the existing building, or constructing a new one – as of course they both use foundations of some kind.

I’m with most people here in wanting it to be restored sensitively to preserve the outward appearance at least. Obviously financial realities need to be considered as well. Are there any official bodies that might be able to award some sort of grant to make preservation possible, I wonder?

Something needs to be done about this to pressure the council to give the owners an ultimatum, preserve or sell on. They could even seize it after a period of time if not developed.
