Wandletowns, Carwalton and other bizarre names once considered for the London Borough of Sutton in 1965

Next time you see a London Borough of Sutton sign, consider that the area could have been called something else altogether. Secret Carshalton takes a look at 6 fascinating options that were once on the table…

Let’s start with Carwalton…

1 Carwalton

In 1965 the government wanted to change how London was organised.

They decided on a new district that combined 3 major boroughs in the county of Surrey –

Considered the most important districts at the time, one suggestion was to mix the names of Carshalton and Wallington together.

Jim McMahon, the Chairman of Carshalton Council, said: “We want the name Carshalton because it is the only place of that name in the country.”

The 3 boroughs couldn’t agree, so one option to save arguments was this – two of the area’s most distinctive features were combined into one name.

3 Wandletowns

Another option was to celebrate the River Wandle and the prosperity it bought to the area over the years.

4 Fairlands

A simple name that sounded nice.

5 South Wall-Car

Another way of mixing two of the main historic towns, and putting Wallington first.

6 Sutton Carew

Sutton was becoming a favourite. But arguments were made that Sutton was too familiar a word – more than 111 places by that name already existed in Britain.

To provide distinction from other Sutton’s in the UK, the town name was combined with one of the area’s most influential families over history – the Carews of Beddington.

However, after much discussion, in the end, the Minister for Housing and Local Government, Sir Keith Joseph, had the final say – and simply opted for Sutton. Sutton was the biggest town and considered to have lots of potential for development in 1965.

The rest as they say, is history.

And there you have it. Which is your favourite? Got a better option yourself?
