*Historical* It’s an interesting area all around Westcroft Road in Carshalton, and here’s a closer look at Bramble Haw (or Bramblehaw). Not much remains of the old house.
🗝 The comparison picture above shows you where the entrance gates to Bramble Haw once stood. To the left through the entrance, in the grounds, the Wandle was once above ground and there was a footbridge over the water.
🗝 The house itself was built around the 1750s from Portland Stone, said to be originally destined for a new mansion house, never built, in Carshalton Park.
🗝 The house and land was owned at one point by the Beynon family who actually lived across Westcroft Road in Parkfields (more on that house another time).
🗝 The coach house still stands, called Bramble Haw End, and there was a staff cottage on the land, also still standing. This has a glasshouse/summerhouse on the grounds (you can just make this out in one of the pics) that was said to be part of the 1851 Great Exhibition. However, it has since been considered to be built circa 1905-1914. The dovecote barn also still stands. You can see a track still there, that would have led from the barn to the back of the grand house.
🗝 Bramble Haw was demolished around 1926, the same time as Carshalton Park House, when large areas of Carshalton were destined for suburban development.

I grew up in a house in Westcroft Road in the late 50s. We had one of the garages shown in the picture. Groceries delivered by Mr Mrs Owen’s shop in the High Street. I also worked on his local milk round as a boy. The dovecot in the picture needs a mention as I believe it is listed.
