Surviving 19th century laundry room is a reminder of how hard life once was

The simple task of turning on a washing machine was not a luxury available to the family who once lived at what is now the Honeywood Museum in Carshalton. Here’s a brief look at the old scullery… which is open to the public.

This large furnace in the corner (known as a Copper, named after the bowl on the top) is original to Honeywood and is in the scullery – an area we would now call a utility room. The kitchen itself was in the room currently occupied by the tea room.

This shallow stoneware sink below is also original to Honeywood.

*The Scullery was most likely built during the time of John Pattinson Kirk and his wife Leah in around 1901 – replacing an earlier wooden structure. They probably had a housemaid.
