Crowd turn up for long-awaited return of the Anne Boleyn Statue

*News* A large crowd turned up to see an award-winning sculpture of Anne Boleyn  unveiled – returned to its rightful place after a 14 year absence. It was 11am on a Monday morning and some had even taken the morning off work to take a look. The day marked 489 years since Boleyn’s execution at the Tower of London.

The plinth on the corner of this building overlooking Carshalton ponds and Anne Boleyn’s well, was created by the architects when the building was erected in 1967. Around 2011, the wooden statue was taken away by the artist for repair.

The heavy Anne Boleyn statue had been lifted in to place at around 8.30am on the morning of 19 May, 2025.

Crowds had already gathered by 10.30 for the official 11am unveiling by Jeff Richards, a lay reader at St Nicholas church in Sutton. The statue’s sculptor Dennis Huntley (1928 – 2021) had designed an altar for the church.

Also in attendance was local MP, Bobby Dean and a group dressed as Anne Boleyn in period-costume. Secret Carshalton was delighted to receive a name check along with many others who had called for the return of the statue.

There was also a small exhibition inside the building, just for the morning.

What campaign should we do next?
