*Historical* Some more images from a retrospective of Carshalton Ponds – featuring hand-coloured photographs. The bottom image shows a view of the Wandle running alongside the high street. It was moved underground as the water level began to drop and the area was developed.
The upper pond, shown here, was also known as the horse pond as these turn of the century images demonstrate.

The ponds would have had a soft, natural bed ideal for hooves, before being lined with concrete in 1968.

Re photos of horses in the water near the Greyhound, this wasn’t just for the horses hooves. The wooden wheels on the carts dried out in hot weather and the joints became loose. Taking carts through water made the wood swell again.
