*Historical* We’ve always been fascinated by this timeless photo of circus animals at Carshalton Ponds, so we’ve delved a little deeper into the history of this image, along with a similar photo taken at the Horse Pond in Ewell. Both shots are enhanced with stunning AI colourisation
Many locals had gathered to watch the spectacle from the Causeway between Carshalton upper and lower pond.
The upper pond, also known as the Horse Pond, was a perfect place to take a dip – being shallow, at this time soft-surfaced, and with a ramp in and out.
The animals consists of elephants, horses, and you can make out a couple of camels too.
It’s likely that the same group stopped off at the Horse Pond on Chessington Road, Ewell – seen here in this newly colorised image.
The pond is still there, but when the photo was taken there was no boundary fence.
You can clearly see the camels in this photo.
Where did the circus take place? It’s not definite, but perhaps behind a Boys School in East Street, Epsom – during the very early 20th century – circa 1900 – 1905.
The circus was named Sanger’s Circus – set up by brothers (Lord) George and John Sanger from Berkshire. It’s likely the circus had a promotional photographer following them around to document the events and to build interest.
