*Historical* Famous YouTube star Tom Scott, talks about an amazing invention built in Carshalton and designed by Dr Ludwig Guttmann at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire. The Hospital is famous for creating the Paralympics, and this 1945 bed-cycle helped people train.
It’s currently on display at the Science Museum in London.

Here’s a 2-minute clip with Tom discussing the machine.
The contraption was built at 31 Pound Street by Metal Products (Carshalton) Ltd – they were situated on the corner of Carshalton Park Road and Pound Street. It was once an industrious part of Carshalton, where in 1927 Wardill motor & cycle company developed a motorcycle still in use today.

Carshalton attracted a lot of industry perhaps drawn here by the River Wandle. For example, the engine for the world’s first kit car was built off Mill Lane, using Water-powered energy.

Thanks to Sophie for the tip-off about this
