A very brief pictorial wander around Reigate

*Local Walks* Take a trip to Reigate in Surrey with its historic buildings and a wonderful collection of independent shops and cafes.

The old town hall in the heart of the town is probably Reigate’s most recognisable landmark. You can visit the whole building for free as it’s currently a Cafe Nero. As the sign below says it was built in 1708.

A short wander from here brings you to this narrow passageway. You go past this rustic 16th-century house to reach the site of the 1088 Reigate Castle.

No original structures remain of the castle, but the high fortress mound is visible. It was a private garden until the 19th Century, when it was opened to the public as a park. This folly was built by the landowner over the remains of the castle.

This pyramid in the centre of the gardens leads you down to Reigate caves and the old castle cellars.

Reigate is easily reached by car from Carshalton by following the A217. There’s ample parking around the centre of town and once there, lots of hidden places to discover.
