Bluebell Giants of Steam day features surprisingly tiny Terrier loco pertinent to Sutton

The weekend of 13-15 October 2023 saw a special event at the wonderful Bluebell Railway. The line between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead in West Sussex features the longest tunnel in Europe on a heritage railway.

Among the huge engines running was the oldest, and smallest on display. The ‘Terrier’ style of loco ran for many years in the local areas of Carshalton, Wallington, Beddington and Sutton. This example was built in 1872. It’s the first time I’ve seen one in person and was surprised how small it was considering the amount of passenger carriages it would have once pulled around the area.
