Entire Rock Aristocracy Descend on Beddington for the Funeral of Guitar Legend Jeff Beck

The funeral of the late, great Jeff Beck took place at St Mary’s Church in Beddington on Friday 3 February 2023.

There’s probably never been such a star-studded occasion in the area, and passers-by described it as ‘surreal’.

Attendees included Eric Clapton, Kate Bush, David Gilmour, Brian May, Ronnie Wood, Tom Jones, Harry Enfield, Vic Reeves, Kirk Hammett, Rod Stewart, Chrissie Hynde, Bob Geldof, Tim Burton, and Johnny Depp. Church Road was heaving with police and security for the private ceremony.

The sombre occasion celebrated the life of Geoffrey Arnold Beck who was born in nearby Demesne Road in 1944, a short walk from the historic church.

The ceremony had been kept secret, and by 2pm the mourners had left.

The wake was held at Nonsuch Mansion in Cheam.

Back in the mid 60s I was a choirboy at this church and remember my older sister telling me about Jeff being a local of the area. I loved singing in that church and I also loved seeing Jeff play live in Malmö, Sweden some 40 years later.

Luckily they did stream outside so I watched them arriving to the service. My brother was at school with Geoff and I knew him from when I used to swim at ‘The Orphanage’ behind Carew Manor. So many memories…

Yes like you all say,as I don’t live too far away and know the church. if I had known about the place and timing of Jeff Becks funeral I would have also gone to pay my respects to a great person who thought of other people and taught over stars how to play etc and didn’t push himself right to the front. But let’s all think about this if the funeral was publicised, it would have turned into a mass gathering and Jeff may not have got a peaceful, quiet send off. So Rest in Peace Jeff and God Bless You, and play your music with the Angel’s in Heaven From Chris
